Why even go through the trouble of making canna-butter? The short answer is why not? See, having cannabutter around means you can make any meal a medicated edible. Think about it, how about a wake and bake with some french toast cooked in a teaspoon of canna-butter!? A quick garlic toast… elevated? How about the traditional pot-brownie? The options are literally endless. If you can cook it, you might as well get high off it.
But in all seriousness, medicating via the edible way has many benefits. One of the main benefits for me is that I have complete control over the ingredients used, the strain, and the dose used in the infusion. Not to mention it’s much more cost-effective than purchasing gummies at your local dispensary. On the other hand, it’s also true that many folks get way too high the first time they do edibles. It happens, but we can safeguard ourselves and do better next time. Always start slow and low. Take a small amount, maybe a serving dosed at 2.5 mg to 5 mg then wait, wait a good hour, and see how you feel.
The onset of edibles may seem slow but it’ll last up to 8 hours, so overdoing can suck pretty bad for some, or you may end up sleeping it off. So, in order to properly dose your edibles use a THC calculator, just google “THC edible calculator” and a bunch of options will become available. You’ll likely discover some other cool cannabis-friendly sites to follow and learn with.
A little planning ahead of time will facilitate all your baked inspirations! There are so many ways to do this, but to keep it brief we’ll focus on 2 of them.
Stockpot method– This is the basic way to get started, but remember to use proper measurements and a dosing calculator.
Ingredients: 1 cup melted unsalted butter and 3 grams of loosely ground decarboxylated flower
Tools: medium stockpot, 12 oz canning jar, canning tongs, strainer, cheesecloth, and measuring cup
Instructions:
1. Mix melted butter and flower into the jar, seal the jar tightly.
2. Place jar in a stockpot, fill with hot water to the top of the canning jar.
3. Place uncovered stockpot over high heat and bring to a boil, once boil breaks lower heat to simmer. Allow simmering for 2 hours checking often to see if more hot water needs to be added. An hour into simmering, “burp” the jar by removing the lid and then placing back to simmer.
4. After a total of 2 hours of simmering, strain jar contents into a cheesecloth-lined strainer and squeeze as much product as possible from the cheesecloth. Place canna-butter in an airtight glass container or in silicone butter mold.
* Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
In case you like this method and want to make it easier next time, these items really come in handy!
The LÉVO II method– This is the cleanest, the easiest, the most accurate, and also the most expensive- but totally worth the investment. The Levo II is a dream to use! Their website will allow you to select the oil type, the herb type, and based on those two selections you’ll know exactly how long to program the Levo II to infuse and at what temperature. But what’s even better is that you can dry, decarboxylate, and infuse it all in one machine and at the push of a button. Set it and forget it!
So in my opinion, if you’re going to be making edibles frequently, then the LÉVO II will pay for itself.
A special note on the LĒVO II is that this is the most discrete way to make edibles because the machine traps most of the scent (so that the whole neighborhood doesn’t know you’re cooking).
